πŸ•΅οΈ Part 1/6 of our series U of Noir

With all-time performances by Fred MacMurray, Edward G. Robinson, and, of course, the great Barbara Stanwyck, Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity is perhaps the perfect film noir. Wilder, a master of both comedy and tragedy, draws upon German expressionism to make this film full of shadowy interiors, strange angels, and venetian blind lighting. The translucence continues with grey morality in a Raymond Chandler script that had to work around the censorship of the Hays Code: still managing to toe the line with its bleak nihilism. The scene is set early with a silhouette of a hobbled man on crutches, and the stakes only get higher from there, so join us at Jepson 118 for this classic film noir masterpiece.
