Hard Light is excited to be teaming up with BUBBLES ZINE for a special screening of Marjane Satrapi’s animated film, Persepolis!
Based on a graphic novel by Satrapi of the same name, Persepolis is an autobiography of sorts. The film follows Marjane – or Marji, as she’s known by her family – and her childhood in Iran, as well as her teenage years in Austria. An independent thinker from a young age, Marji struggles to conform in a post-revolution Iran as she turns her interests to punk rock & heavy metal, Marxism, and feminist thinking. Her parents, afraid that their daughter will be arrested if she keeps pushing back against the authorities at school, have her sent to a French boarding school in Austria. Now uprooted from her home and culture, Marji struggles to find her identity in Europe.
Satrapi’s graphic novel, released in two parts between 2000 and 2003, has become a worldwide phenomenon, selling over two million copies. This portrait of author Satrapi, her family, and her beloved home of Iran is a rare example of a graphic novel’s film adaptation staying in-house, marrying Satrapi’s signature style & humor with stunning animation.
We hope you can join us and Bubbles Zine for an evening to celebrate comics, animation, and Marjane Satrapi’s life!
Be sure to check out BUBBLES CON on June 6 and 7 at the Main Branch of the Richmond Public Library! Find more details at their website.
