dir. Claire Denis
In 35 Shots of Rum, Denis, a long time admirer of the Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, presents us with a retelling of sorts of Ozu’s masterpiece Late Spring. Instead of taking place in Tokyo, Denis relocates the setting to Paris, focusing on a father and daughter (Alex Descas and Mati Diop) living together in an apartment complex. Tackling themes of generational divides, love vs. familial duties, the pressure of societal expectations (particularly for immigrant families in the western world), and the beautiful love between us, 35 Shots of Rum is one of the finest films of the 2000s.

This is the next installation in a series of Staff Picks from the Hard Light crew. This film was selected by Lewis, on the grounds that it is a quietly tender and magnificent film he felt would move a crowd.
