dir. Mati Diop
As we continue with our Black History Month programming, we’ll be showing this emotionally and historically charged documentary by actor/director Mati Diop. Covering the repatriation from France to Benin of 26 ancient artifacts from the kingdom of Dahomey that were plundered by the French, DAHOMEY is a film that is meant to start a dialogue. Much of the film focuses on conversations from students on the nature of repatriation as well as what anti-imperialist action looks like in the 21st century.
Because of the educational nature of this film, we will keep this event free for entry, with donations encouraged. We’re so excited that we were able to partner with Mubi to bring this film to yall! Mati Diop’s film has played at many festivals, but it hasn’t found many theatrical showings in VA. Featuring music by Wally Badarou & Dean Blunt as well as writings by Makenzy Orcel, DAHOMEY is an incredible work.
